Viral Jakarta-Tangerang Toll Road Suffers Severe Damage, Jasa Marga Carries Out Repairs
A section of the Jakarta-Tangerang toll road went viral on social media after users documented severe damage and potholes across multiple stretches. The video, posted on Tuesday 10 March by the @txtdaritng account on platform X, showed the toll road surface heavily pitted with holes.
The damage triggered lengthy traffic congestion on the Cikupa-Karang Tengah stretch heading towards Jakarta on Tuesday, with vehicles queued from kilometre 37 to kilometre 13.
According to observations on Tuesday afternoon, the most severe damage was located in the Karawaci area. Damage also occurred on the Jakarta-to-Tangerang direction, including before the Kunciran and Bitung toll exits.
The toll road section, specifically between kilometres 23 and 24, had been flooded due to overflow from the Kali Sabi river on Sunday 8 March, leaving lasting damage to the road surface.
The potholes forced vehicles to slow down, and some drivers were compelled to navigate around damaged areas, exacerbating traffic congestion.
Anggi, a toll road user, expressed frustration at being trapped in congestion for hours due to unrepaired road damage. “The congestion lasted a very long time. It turned out to be because of potholes at several points. These should be repaired quickly because this is a toll road,” he said.
He argued that the conditions were highly detrimental to motorists, noting that as a paid toll route, the section should maintain high service and maintenance standards to avoid endangering road users.
Similar concerns were raised by truck driver Madi, who stated that the deteriorated road conditions slowed vehicle flow and caused congestion, particularly during peak hours. “I was trying to deliver goods to Pasar Kemis market, but because traffic was delayed, the delivery process was late and cost me money,” Madi complained.
In an official statement, Ginanjar Bekti R, Senior Manager of Representative Office 2 at Jasamarga Metropolitan Tollroad, stated that the company had been conducting staged maintenance work. “The maintenance activities are being carried out together with PT Jasamarga Tollroad Maintenance (JMTM) as the toll road maintenance service provider,” Ginanjar said.
He explained that rigid reconstruction work on the Tangerang direction had been conducted on lane 1 between kilometres 15+240 and 15+270 on Monday 9 March.
Meanwhile, scraping, filling, and overlay (SFO) work was performed in the Jakarta direction on lane 3 between kilometres 26+350 and 26+250 on Sunday 8 March.
“Jasa Marga apologises for the inconvenience caused by this work,” Ginanjar stated.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, comply with traffic signs, and follow instructions from field personnel. “Additionally, please plan your travel time and route, and ensure sufficient electronic toll card balance for smooth travel,” he added.
