Viral Incident of Cooking Instant Noodles on Train: KAI's Rules on Power Socket Usage
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A video went viral on social media showing a passenger cooking instant noodles using an electric stove inside a train carriage. Based on investigations, the incident occurred on the KA Murhani train while it was stopped at Tegal Station on Wednesday (22/4/2026). In response to the viral video, Luqman Arif, Manager of Public Relations for Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 4 Semarang, stated that the power sockets available at each seat are intended for personal electronic devices with low power consumption, such as charging mobile phones, tablets, laptops, or earphones. “The use of power sockets for high-power equipment, such as electric stoves, rice cookers, hair dryers, or other household electronic appliances, is strictly prohibited,” Luqman said in an official statement on Friday (24/4/2026). Regarding the viral video, Luqman expressed regret over the passenger’s action of turning on an electric stove in one of the train carriages. He said that this action violates KAI’s regulations and rules. He added that such actions carry safety risks and can disrupt the train’s electrical system. “We understand the public’s attention to this issue. Therefore, KAI is currently conducting a thorough investigation and review to ensure the accuracy of the circulating information, as part of our commitment to maintaining safety and service quality,” he added. He reminded that using high-power devices simultaneously can trigger excessive electrical load, potentially disrupting the train’s electrical system. In light of this, KAI urged passengers to use power sockets wisely. Permitted devices are limited to low-power gadgets, while high-power electronic appliances are not allowed. He advised passengers to ensure that devices being charged do not overheat. He also suggested unplugging devices from the power socket once charging is complete. “We invite all customers not only to be orderly during their journey but also to be wise in responding to information circulating on social media. Ensure that received information has been verified to avoid misunderstandings in society,” Luqman emphasised.
