A video showing a glowing white object in the sky over Bekasi City, West Java, has gone viral on social media. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has provided an explanation regarding the phenomenon.

In the circulating video, the flying object appears white. The video was recorded during the daytime, with the sky in bright condition.

At that time, the moon was also visible in the sky despite the brightness. The recorder then directed the camera and zoomed in to capture the object.

The object also appeared to emit white light and leave a trail or flying trace in the form of light. The video was recorded by someone named Ryan Pratama last month.

“Yes, I took it, on 24 April, in the afternoon around 5:00 PM WIB,” said Ryan when confirmed by detikcom on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

Ryan said the video was recorded from his residence in the Kranji area, Bekasi City. He claimed that at the time, he only intended to record the appearance of the moon that had already appeared while the sky was still bright.

“I was playing with my child in front of the house. We were looking at the moon in the afternoon. Suddenly, I saw something flying by,” he said.

What Does BRIN Say?

Coordinator of the Astronomy and Observatory Research Group (Pokris) at BRIN, Thomas Djamaluddin, shared his view on the glowing flying object in the Bekasi sky. He suspects the object is a meteor.

“It looks like a bright meteor. Because it’s quite bright, it can be seen during the day,” said Thomas when confirmed separately.

Thomas conveyed this after viewing the video recorded by Ryan. The meteor appeared as it passed through the atmosphere and was eventually captured by the camera.

“Yes. That happens often,” he said.

He mentioned that BRIN is currently preparing a site that can monitor space objects. The site will monitor space debris that has the potential to fall in Indonesian territory.

“It’s being prepared at orbit.brin.go.id. That site is for information on debris that (potentially) falls in Indonesian territory. For meteors, it requires analysis by researchers,” he explained.
