A post narrating the damage to one of the classrooms at SDN Bendungan 2 in Karangmojo, Gunungkidul, has gone viral on social media. The school stated that the classroom is damaged on the roof due to rainwater leakage, and it is currently undergoing repairs.

“The admin received a submission, a video related to the condition of SDN 2 Bendungan (Karangmojo sub-district). Class 6 is still being used this morning for practical exams. The condition of the triangular upper supports and connections… at the start of the last holiday, when school resumed, the wooden supports for the ceiling were rotting, yesterday when school started, it was better to dismantle it rather than risk it collapsing,” said the Instagram account @fokusgunungkidul as seen by detikJogja today.

The principal of SDN Bendungan 2, Karangmojo, Gunungkidul, Suharto, confirmed the damage to the sixth-grade classroom. According to him, the damage has been ongoing for a long time.

“The damage is only to the ceiling, specifically the eternit supports. It’s damaged due to leakage, but that happened before I was there; I became principal in 2023,” he said when contacted by detikJogja on Thursday (2/4/2026).

Suharto continued that the school is still using the room for teaching and learning activities (KBM). There are 10 pupils currently in sixth grade.

“The classroom is still in use because it’s actually safe,” he said.

The school is also said to have carried out repairs. The repairs are using School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds.

“If on social media it looks dismantled, that’s because it’s under repair and that happened recently. The ceiling is already new, just the eternit hasn’t been installed yet,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Gunungkidul Regency Education Office (Disdik), Nunuk Setyowati, said she was aware of the information. In fact, Nunuk said that Disdik would soon conduct a check at the school.

“I have instructed the elementary school division to check,” she said.
