Viral Chat Group Alleging Sexual Harassment of Engineering Students: UGM Responds
A chat group involving students from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTETI) at the Faculty of Engineering, UGM, has gone viral on social media due to content involving alleged sexual harassment. UGM has responded, emphasising its commitment to investigating the case with great care.
Screenshots of the engineering students’ chat group have been circulating online. In the shared screenshots, several students can be seen using sensitive language that disparages female body parts.
Universitas Gadjah Mada stated that it is currently investigating the obscene conversations within the Faculty of Engineering student group. UGM affirmed that it will continue to coordinate with relevant parties to determine the most appropriate course of action for handling the case.
“UGM is taking careful and cautious steps to investigate this case of Online Gender-Based Violence (KGBO),” said UGM spokesperson, Dr I Made Andi Arsana, as reported by detikJogja on Tuesday (29/09/2026).
“The Faculty of Engineering has already issued a statement of position. Coordination with relevant parties is being carried out effectively to ensure the steps taken are appropriate. We will provide updates at the earliest opportunity,” he added.
The Chairperson of the UGM Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS), Prof. Dra. Raden Ajeng Yayi Suryo Prabandari, stated that the university is conducting a full investigation into the alleged sexual harassment. She noted that the case is currently in progress.
“Thank you for contacting me and for your attention; the case is being processed by the task force in conjunction with the university,” Yayi told detikJogja via a short message on Monday (28/09).
