Viral Cattle Carcass Dumped on Roadside, East Flores Livestock Office Outraged
A cattle carcass was discovered lying in undergrowth near Jalan Trans Larantuka-Maumere, specifically in Mokantarak Village. The discovery went viral on social media and drew scrutiny for being deemed environmentally polluting.
The Department of Plantations and Livestock (Disbunter) of East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), expressed dismay at the cattle owner’s action of dumping the animal carcass so irresponsibly near the main road.
“This is utterly outrageous—such irresponsible owners cause environmental pollution,” said Vianey Kiti Tokan, Head of Animal Health at the Department of Plantations and Livestock of East Flores, when contacted on Monday (2 March 2026).
Vianey explained that although no contagious disease was found in the cattle at present, dumping carcasses in open spaces still poses a potential risk to public health and comfort because of the offensive odour produced.
“Our appeal is that dead cattle must be buried to avoid harming human, animal, and environmental health,” he stressed.
The case first gained attention after being posted on Facebook the same day. The cattle carcass was seen lying among piles of rubbish on the roadside, triggering reactions from social media users.
“Dead animals should be buried, not dumped like this. Poor people who pass by. This is not a rat, but a cow. Terrible,” wrote Nilson Chean on the wall of the East Flores Voice Facebook group.
From photos received, cement sacks were seen scattered around the cattle carcass.
