Viral Allegation of Tourist Harassment at Yogyakarta's Zero Kilometre Point Resolved Amicably

A social media post alleging sexual harassment against a female tourist at the Zero Kilometre Point in Yogyakarta City went viral, leading to a police investigation and the questioning of the suspected perpetrator. The Instagram account @merapi_uncover shared a video showing a middle-aged man being escorted into a police vehicle at the iconic landmark. The post claimed the incident, involving harassment and racism, occurred around 9:30 p.m. and that police and intelligence officers quickly apprehended the suspect after the victim reported it.

Confirming the incident, Yogyakarta City Police Public Relations Acting Head, Second Inspector Dani Hasan, stated the alleged harassment took place on Saturday night (4/7). A female tourist from Jakarta was walking along Jalan Pangurakan from south to north when she passed a man and felt her chest being touched. She immediately reported the encounter to officers stationed at the Zero Kilometre Point, and the man was detained for questioning.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage from the scene with the tourist, police determined the contact was unintentional. The recording showed the man walking from north to south and passing the woman while attempting to adjust his bag with his left hand, causing his elbow to brush against her left shoulder. Based on this evidence, both parties agreed not to pursue the matter further. The woman decided not to file a report and resumed her sightseeing along Jalan Malioboro.
