Villages have no public facilities

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Some twelve villages in Jayapura lack basic social services such as clean water sources and public transport.

Delila Giay, head of the Kentuk Gressy subdistrict, said so far, related offices in the provincial administration have yet to give serious attention to the poor condition in the villages.

"The provincial government has allocated funds to build social and public facilities in the subdistrict but so far nothing has been done to resolve social problems in the villages," she said.

Delila, the first Papuan female official in Jayapura, also said hundreds of students are forced to cover great distances on foot to reach their school because of the absence of public transport in the subdistrict.

"The villages have been interconnected with the city but so far, they have no public transport to get students and travelers to the city," she said. --Antara
