Villagers protest steam power project

JEPARA, Central Java: Hundreds of people in Tubanan village have protested the damage to their property by the transportation of building materials to Tanjungjati B steam power plant.

The villagers rallied in the street and erected roadblocks, stopping access to the project site.

The villagers, who staged a similar protest Tuesday, claimed the heavy vehicles seriously damaged roads in their neighborhood and cracked their brick walls.

"The trucks have caused extensive damage to the roads and citizens' property since the project began on Nov. 19 last year," said village chief Kasmin.

The residents have demanded compensation from contractor PT Copa Indonesia for the damage.

Kasmin said the citizens would not stop protesting until their demand was met. (har)
