Village-Owned Enterprise in Bekasi Develops Cattle Farming to Strengthen Food Security

Bekasi Regency (ANTARA) - The Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) Cikahuripan in Kertarahayu Village, Setu District, Bekasi Regency is developing a cattle fattening business as an effort to strengthen local food security whilst boosting the regional economy through a collaboration scheme with local entrepreneurs.

"Through this cattle fattening business unit, we are not only pursuing profit but also strengthening food security whilst creating employment opportunities for the village's younger generation," said Karma, Head of Livestock at BUMDes Cikahuripan, at the location on Monday.

He said the enterprise had actually been initiated two years ago but only began showing promising prospects in the past year, to the point where it now employs three local youths in the daily operations of the farm.

"We want this BUMDes to become an engine driving the economy. There are three young people from the area who are on standby full-time here — they recently graduated from school and had been unemployed. Here they are learning how to farm professionally," he said.

The development of the village's agribusiness sector demonstrates that such enterprises can flourish and absorb productive labour when managed seriously.

The cattle are prepared for special occasions such as Eid al-Adha through a fattening process carried out meticulously from approximately one year of age and reared for 10 months until ready for sale.

For this year's Eid al-Adha, BUMDes Cikahuripan has prepared a varied stock of cattle. At least 17 head of cattle from superior breeds such as Limousin, Marlboro, Peranakan Ongol (PO), Pegon and Gama have met the standards for sale.

"We offer competitive prices, starting from Rp20 million up to the most premium at Rp45 million per head. The weights also vary, ranging from 300 kg up to the largest reaching 780 kg," he said.

According to him, the key to the success of the cattle fattening business lies in discipline regarding care and nutrition. One truckload of straw is brought in every two days to meet the livestock's needs, as cattle require high rough fibre feed. In addition to straw, the cattle are also fed tofu dregs, concentrate, mixed feed supplements as well as routine vitamin supplements and deworming medication.

Sanitation is also a primary concern, with pens cleaned morning and evening to prevent bacteria.

"Cattle care is carried out professionally to maintain livestock quality whilst supporting food security in the village. We also ensure the pens are kept clean every day so the cattle remain healthy and comfortable," he said.

Karma acknowledged that the quality of cattle in Kertarahayu Village is now widely recognised, with distribution reaching as far as Mampang in Jakarta and Cirebon. The business model is run transparently through collaboration with BUMDes using a fair profit-sharing system.

"We collaborate using a profit-sharing system. The percentage is split equally, 50-50. With this system, there is a spirit of togetherness in advancing the village enterprise because all parties benefit directly," he said.
