Village chief defrauds haj

BEKASI (JP): The chief of the Sukaragam village in Serang district, Bekasi, H.M. Atang, who defrauded 40 villagers of their haj pilgrimage fees, has tendered his resignation, promising that he will give back the money to the prospective pilgrims.

Spokesman for the Bekasi administration, Yaya Ruyatnasih, has confirmed that regent Moch. Jamhari has received Atang's resignation letter. "But the regent has yet to make any decision as to whether or not he will accept the resignation," Yaya said.

She said if the regent gave the nod to the resignation, the Bekasi administration could no longer hand down an administrative punitive sanction to Atang.

"If that is to be the case the 40 villagers, who were defrauded by Atang, are advised to report the case to police," Yaya said. (12/bas)
