Viewing Smoke from Sumatra’s Forest Fires from the Air

Thick smoke rose over parts of South Sumatra on Sunday (18 October).

Video footage showed the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) inspecting fire-hit areas in Ogan Komering Ilir regency.

Plumes of smoke billowed over several forest areas, while urban buildings were barely visible through the haze.

The forest fires have reportedly caused 283,000 people across seven provinces to suffer acute respiratory infections (ARI).

Smoke from the fires has also worsened air quality in neighbouring countries, including Malaysia and Singapore.
