Viewing gallery becomes tourist spot in Medan

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Make do with what you have. This proverb correctly describes the attitude of Medan people, who thirsted for entertainment during the Idul Fitri holidays.

As tourist attractions are limited in Medan, many have flocked to the viewing gallery at Polonia International Airport during the holidays, simply to observe aircraft taking off and landing there.

Most took their children, who enthusiastically observed the "iron birds."

"Every day, since the Idul Fitri holiday started on Tuesday, hundreds of people come here. They are pleased when they are charged only Rp 1,000 per person to enter the viewing gallery," said an airport employee.

The gallery, located on the second floor of the airport, is a hall where families and relatives are allowed to see off those departing on flights.

"Children are very happy that they can see directly aircraft taking off and landing," said Heng Liem, a Medan resident, one of hundreds of "tourists" in the viewing gallery. -- Antara
