Vietnam's foreign investment

HANOI (DPA): Vietnam approved foreign investment amounting to
US$1.6 billion for the first eight months of 1998, according to
official figures released Thursday.

The ministry of planning and investment listed a total of 171
projects licensed by Hanoi during the period with registered
capital of 537 million dollars.

The ministry did not release comparative figures for the same
period last year.

But the latest figures suggest a downturn in investment
compared to 1997, when US$4.4 billion of new foreign direct
investment (FDI) was licensed.

FDI would hit only $2.4 billion dollars for the year at the
current rate of investment.
