Vietnam Airlines Plane Turns Back After Dumping Fuel, Why?

A Vietnam Airlines aircraft was forced to return to Munich Airport in Germany after circling in the air for more than two hours to reduce fuel on Saturday (15/8/2026) local time. The Boeing 787 was reported to have experienced a runway overrun during the take-off process.

The Hanoi-bound aircraft returned to its departure airport on Saturday after previously taking off from Munich.

Flightradar24 reported that the aircraft circled for more than two hours before returning to land.

According to Flightradar24, passengers were evacuated using emergency slides after the aircraft returned to the airport. Fire crews were also on the scene.

Vietnam Airlines confirmed that the Hanoi-bound aircraft did return to its departure airport after take-off. However, the airline stated that the decision was due to a ‘technical issue’ without explaining in detail the type of fault that occurred.

‘During the flight, the crew followed all required procedures and landed safely at Munich Airport. The passengers and cabin crew are safe,’ Vietnam Airlines said in a statement, as quoted by Reuters.
