Vietnam Accelerates Nuclear Power Plant with Rosatom, Russia Says Indonesia Yet to Submit Formal Request

Vietnam and Russia are seeking to accelerate the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the Southeast Asian nation, according to Vietnam’s Ambassador to Russia, Dang Minh Khoi, speaking to RIA Novosti. The plant’s construction will be in cooperation with Rosatom. “Both sides hope to begin construction. Both sides agree that this process needs to be accelerated,” the ambassador stated. The diplomat expressed hope that the two countries will soon conclude discussions on technical matters. Russia and Vietnam signed an intergovernmental agreement on the construction of the Ninh Thuan-1 nuclear power plant in March 2026. The project, according to Russian state nuclear company Rosatom, includes the construction of two Generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors of Russian design, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts. Vietnam also hopes that Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vietnam in 2027. “We have begun preparations for the APEC summit. We hope President Putin will visit and participate,” Dang said. Vietnamese official Le Minh Hung met with Putin on the sidelines of the Russia-ASEAN summit in Kazan on 18 June and conveyed an invitation from President To Lam to visit Vietnam. Le Minh Hung also invited Putin to participate in the 2027 APEC summit.
