Video: Upscaling Jamu SMEs, Compliance with Standards Proves a Challenge

Jakarta – CNBC Indonesia. Indonesia remains dependent on imports of pharmaceutical products according to BBPOM (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan), even though the country has potential economic value of the herbal medicine industry up to Rp350 trillion per year. Harun Pramono, chief executive of PT Ultra Sakti, says Indonesia has vast potential to become a major player in the herbal medicine industry, though progress is required, including improvements in the quality of the traditional medicines industry. Nevertheless, the difficulty of meeting BPOM requirements, including CPOTB (Cara Pembuatan Obat Tradisional yang Baik), by UMKM herbal producers remains a challenge, despite the domestic market being very large, reaching up to 40% of Indonesia’s population. Because PT Ultra Sakti is a pharmaceutical company that produces and packages Over-The-Counter (OTC) products, herbal medicines and health supplements that can be sold freely, it participates in educating UMKM to raise the standardisation of their herbal products. Currently, of around 20,000 registered jamu, only 71 products have been able to move up to Standardised Herbal Medicine (OHT) status. At Ultra Sakti, the development of herbal and OTC products continues to innovate in formulation and packaging to meet various market segments. Ultra Sakti also aims to expand its market beyond Java and even abroad by strengthening its distribution channels. How does the industry view the move to push Indonesia’s jamu products up to the level of standardised herbal products and into the modern wellness product line? See the discussion with Serliana Salsabila and PT Ultra Sakti’s CEO, Harun Pramono, on Profit, CNBC Indonesia (Tuesday, 19 May 2026).
