Video: Strategy to Secure Indonesian Industry from Trade Tariff Uncertainty

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Amid global geopolitical turmoil and the trade tariff war, Edi Prio Pambudi, Deputy for Economic Cooperation and Investment at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, said the Indonesian government sees a fundamental shift in global trade towards ‘economic security’, prompting every country to safeguard its national interests.

Facing these conditions, the government is seeking opportunities within ‘economic security’, setting strategies on trade tariff determination through to strengthening regional trade, including bilateral cooperation. The government is also continuously strengthening risk management in trade cooperation with partner countries.

The government is also partnering with businesses to implement each trade agreement in order to accelerate trade cooperation and drive the Indonesian economy. One trade agreement receiving the government’s attention is the IEU-CEPA (Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement), a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the European Union with high agreement standards.

Every trade deal is being pushed to raise Indonesia’s standards, which is important in strengthening market access for Indonesia. The Indonesian government is also continuing to monitor trade tariff determinations by partner countries, directing them so they are not easily changed, in order to provide tariff certainty for businesses.

At present, Indonesia’s high-value export markets are the European Union and the United States, which have large absorption capacities, as well as regional markets that are important for strengthening supply chains, and non-traditional markets with the potential to absorb Indonesian products.
