Video: Securing Electricity in the Era of War, PLN IP Relies on Coal-Fired Power Plants
Indonesia’s national electricity sector is required to remain reliable, efficient, and sustainable in facing global energy supply chain challenges amid the Middle East war and efforts to achieve the energy transition target towards Net Zero Emissions 2060.
The President Director of PT PLN Indonesia Power, Bernadus Sudarmanta, stated that global geopolitical turmoil also impacts the electricity sector, as this uncertainty causes prices of primary energy sources that power electricity generation—namely coal, gas, and oil—to rise.
In facing this situation, PLN Indonesia Power, as an electricity producer, focuses on efforts to increase the reliability and ensure the operation of power plants that are not significantly affected by the war’s effects, namely coal-fired power plants.
PLN Indonesia Power also faces challenges in operating ageing power plants, thus applying technology so that they can operate optimally and more efficiently, as well as reducing carbon emissions.
On the other hand, PLN IP also ensures support for accelerating the energy transition through increasing the efficiency of existing power plants, strengthening the electricity system so that the system is ready to face the green electricity transition, up to increasing technology adoption and strengthening the circular economy in the power plant environment. In addition, renewable energy power plants such as solar power plants, which have reached 500 Megawatts, and geothermal power plants are being prepared.
What are PLN IP’s steps to maintain the reliability of Indonesia’s electricity amid efforts to promote energy transition and global geopolitical turmoil?
