Video: Reasons Why the Government Considers the Rupiah's Position Still "Undervalued"
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Fithra Faisal, an expert from the Indonesian Government’s Communication Agency, is optimistic about the government’s steps to drive domestic economic growth amid global turbulence, as reflected in the first quarter 2026 economic achievement of 5.61% (year-on-year). Meanwhile, regarding the pressure on the Rupiah which briefly reached Rp17,400 per US dollar, it is not extreme with controlled volatility that does not disrupt the economy, unlike the Rupiah’s condition during the 1998 crisis when it plummeted sharply from Rp5,000 to Rp16,800 per US dollar. Currently, the Rupiah is considered still “undervalued” with a position that should be at Rp16,700 per US dollar, where the Rupiah pressure is caused by disparities in SBN with US Treasury, as well as geopolitical conditions and seasonal factors from the Hajj season and dividend distributions. How does the government view the Rupiah’s position?
