Video of Hijab-Wearing Students in Luwu Singing Christian Hymn Goes Viral

A video featuring several Muslim students from SMP Negeri 1 Tanate, located in the East Walenrang District of Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi, has gone viral on social media as they are seen singing a Christian hymn.

The Head of the Luwu Regency Education Office, Andi Palanggi, admitted that he has already requested an explanation from the school authorities. “As an initial step, we will seek an explanation and clarification from the headmaster to ascertain exactly what happened,” Palanggi stated when confirmed on Monday (1/10).

The 57-second video shows rows of students from SMP Negeri 1 Tanate, wearing school uniforms and hijabs, singing a Christian hymn very seriously within the school premises.

Palanggi admitted that he has not yet been able to reach the headmaster of SMP Negeri 1 Tanate and therefore plans to visit the school in person. “I have tried calling the headmaster, but the calls went unanswered. Therefore, I will go there directly,” he said.

Palanggi explained that his office is still attempting to obtain information and clarification from the school following the video’s viral spread on social media. However, he noted that if any violations are discovered, sanctions will be issued.

“If there are any violations, whether intentional or unintentional, sanctions will certainly be imposed in accordance with the applicable regulations,” he concluded.
