The Indonesian Minister of Transmigration, M. Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara, has revealed the government’s strategy to promote the transmigration programme as a means of redistributing the population, reducing overcrowding, and building new centres of economic growth in Indonesia. The national transmigration programme has been running since the era of President Soekarno and has continued to evolve. However, the programme still faces challenges related to supporting facilities and infrastructure, as well as economic resources, to improve the welfare of transmigrant communities and ensure equitable development. Under the administration of President Prabowo, the Ministry of Transmigration is implementing several transformations to the national programme, including the formalisation of land titles for transmigrants to prevent land conflicts and assisting them in opening business areas. Furthermore, the Ministry is pushing for the optimisation of transmigration land in regions such as East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Aceh, and Sulawesi, where the land contains oil, gas, and coal reserves, which could become a new source of economic activity for the community. Another sector driving economic growth for transmigrant communities is tourism, as seen in Raja Ampat, West Papua, and West Manggarai.
