Video: Local Coated Steel Producer Innovation Rivals Chinese Imports

Jakarta — Indonesia’s local steel industry requires support and protection from the government against a surge of Chinese steel imports and to enhance competitiveness in the global market, according to Handaja Susanto, President Director of PT Saranacentral Bajatama Tbk (BAJA).

Handaja Susanto highlighted the urgent need for trade safeguard measures and anti-dumping import duty rules on imported steel products, including those from China. Such measures are essential to ensure business continuity, given that the steel industry employs a significant workforce.

To strengthen competitiveness, the steel industry is pursuing continuous innovation. BAJA, for instance, not only produces Aluminium-Zinc Coated Steel (BjLAS) but has also expanded its product line to include coloured coated steel and manufacturing and warehouse roofing solutions.

These initiatives reflect the sector’s commitment to competing effectively whilst advocating for protective trade policies that safeguard domestic producers and employment.
