Rising fuel costs for fishing, surges in plastic packaging prices, and increases in transport or freight costs of up to 30% are cited by Saut P Hutagalung, Chairman of the Indonesian Tuna Association, as impacts from the Iran vs US & Iraq war on Indonesia’s tuna export business. Currently, tuna exports still rely on ASEAN markets, China, Japan, up to the US and the Middle East, so the war conditions will affect Indonesia’s tuna exports. Therefore, businesspeople are seeking government support regarding the fulfilment of requirements to the strengthening of supply chains to maintain the competitiveness of Indonesia’s fishery products amid spikes in production costs. Indonesia can learn from Vietnam in providing conveniences for the fisheries industry to increase Indonesia’s fisheries competitiveness.
