Video: IDX Composite and Rupiah Both Plummet Amid China's Economic Slump
The domestic financial market on 18 May 2026 experienced intense pressure after the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) and the Rupiah exchange rate both underwent sharp corrections. In response to this volatility, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa requested that market participants remain calm, assessing that this turbulence is merely a short-term sentiment. Purbaya emphasised that Indonesia’s current economic foundations remain very strong in facing external pressures.
Meanwhile, China’s economy began losing momentum in April 2026, after data for consumption, industrial output, and investment were reported to be below market expectations. The impact of the conflict between Iran and the United States-Israel alliance has begun to be felt, causing retail growth in the country to drop to its lowest level in forty months.
