CNBC Indonesia is hosting the EV Transition in Mining Industry Outlook 2026 event, themed “The Future of EVs in Mining Industry: Between Efficiency and High Investment,” which will discuss opportunities, challenges, and readiness in the industry’s adoption of electric vehicle (EV) technology.

Jisman Hutajulu, Special Staff to the Minister of ESDM for Strategic Planning from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia, stated during the EV Transition in Mining Industry Outlook 2026 that steps in energy transition and the development of New Renewable Energy (EBT) towards Net Zero Emission 2060 will simultaneously strengthen energy resilience through the development of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

The government, through the Ministry of ESDM, targets Indonesia’s EBT energy mix to reach 100% within the next 10 years via solar, geothermal, wind, hydro, and bioenergy power plants. Amid geopolitical uncertainties, rising commodity prices, and climate change, energy sovereignty becomes a crucial target implemented through three pillars: energy independence, energy resilience, and energy self-sufficiency.

One effort towards energy sovereignty involves curbing fuel oil (BBM) consumption and reducing energy import dependency, which can be achieved through the development of the EV ecosystem, increased EBT utilisation, and transformation of fuel/gas power plants to solar power plants plus battery energy storage systems (PLTS + BESS).

ESDM records that each vehicle conversion to EV can save up to 267 litres of BBM per year and reduce BBM subsidies by Rp500,000 per unit per year. Indonesia can look to Sweden as a successful example in EV vehicle conversion.

ESDM supports the utilisation of electric-based vehicles in the mining sector as it enhances efficiency, industry competitiveness, and demonstrates the mining sector’s commitment to supporting the national energy transition.
