Video: Certified Seed Self-Sufficiency, Indonesia Must Strengthen Seed Banks

The Chairman of the Indonesian Seed and Breeding Society (MPPI), Herman Khaeron, has revealed a number of challenges facing producers of certified superior seeds in meeting the needs of farmers across Indonesia. Issues surrounding technology, storage systems, and certification remain obstacles, requiring the government to pay special attention, including establishing seed banks with greater capacity to achieve seed self-sufficiency. Furthermore, incentives are needed for seed entrepreneurs to develop certified superior seeds domestically, thereby enhancing innovation in superior seed varieties within the country. Taking lessons from India and the United States, Indonesia should be able to promote the improvement of superior seeds through various incentives and government regulatory support.
