Victims Say New Struggle Begins as Hanania Travel Owner Farhan Named Suspect

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The designation of PT Khazanah Tamma Internasional (Hanania Group) Managing Director Ahmad Syah Farhan as a suspect in an alleged embezzlement case involving Umrah travel funds has left victims unsatisfied. ‘Not at ease, the real struggle has only just begun,’ said one victim, Uli (33), at a press conference in Tebet, South Jakarta, on Monday, June 1, 2026. Uli stated that the thousands of victims’ journey to see Hanania’s boss designated as a suspect by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police was a long process. ‘We repeatedly begged Hanania’s legal representatives for a meeting with the owner, but there was never any goodwill,’ Uli added. Farhan allegedly consistently avoided meeting thousands of pilgrims whose Umrah trips were unilaterally cancelled, demanding compensation. In early April 2026, around 40 victim representatives, accompanied by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, met with Farhan and his wife. During the mediation, several agreements were signed between the victims and the travel company. ‘Farhan agreed on April 14 to split refunds into three instalments, fully paid by late August. He also offered rescheduling options for June, July, or subsequent months in the same year. If rescheduling failed, he committed to a 100% refund,’ Uli said. This led to Farhan being reported to the police and now undergoing further investigation by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police. Uli hopes the government will support Hanania Travel victims in reclaiming their rights. The losses suffered by thousands of victims are estimated at Rp 100 billion.
