Victim Reports Alleged Fraud Over Fake MUI Halal Fatwa for Crypto Product to Police

Jakarta - A legal representative for a corporate victim has reported an alleged fraud involving a fake halal fatwa for a cryptocurrency product to the police. The case was reported at the Metro Jaya Regional Police on 22 June 2026. The victim’s attorney, Grasberg Nahumarury, stated that the suspect, identified by the initials MLA, convinced the victim’s company that they could arrange a halal fatwa from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for a crypto project. The incident began on 29 July 2022 in the Kuningan Timur area, Setiabudi, South Jakarta. The victim subsequently provided operational funds in stages, totalling 120,000 USDT, equivalent to approximately Rp1.8 billion. Suspicion arose after the documents claimed to be the halal fatwa were handed over. Upon verification, MUI stated they had never issued a halal fatwa for the investment in question. The documents are suspected to be forged, featuring fake signatures and stamps of MUI. The report was delayed as the victim initially sought a family-based resolution. The suspect is being charged under the new Criminal Code and faces allegations of fraud and document forgery. Evidence including transfer receipts and the allegedly forged documents has been submitted to investigators. The victim’s lawyer urged the public to be cautious of investment schemes using religious labels and to cross-check certifications directly with official bodies such as MUI, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti).
