A victim of a utility project excavation blast on Jalan RS Fatmawati Raya, Cilandak, South Jakarta, has undergone plastic surgery due to severe facial injuries. Cilandak Police Chief Kompol Gusprihatin Zen stated that whilst one victim’s condition is gradually improving, the other required surgery due to significant facial trauma but remains conscious. Police have not yet been able to interview the victims as their medical recovery remains the priority.

Investigators are currently examining several witnesses and vendors involved in the excavation work to determine the cause of the incident. Gusprihatin noted that a thorough investigation is necessary, and victims will be questioned once their health permits. Regarding medical costs, he confirmed that all treatment expenses for both victims are fully covered by the company undertaking the project.

Police earlier stated the preliminary suspicion is that an electrical cable was severed during the drilling process, triggering the blast. The incident occurred on Monday morning (8/6) whilst workers were conducting excavations to repair a clean water pipe network. The drilling equipment is alleged to have struck an underground electrical cable, causing an explosion. Two workers were injured and immediately evacuated to Fatmawati Hospital. Police have temporarily halted the excavation work for further investigation.
