Washington (ANTARA) - US Vice President J.D. Vance has welcomed Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical ‘Magnifica Humanitas’, which includes theological warnings about the risks of uncontrolled artificial intelligence (AI) advancements.

As a Catholic, Vance admitted he has not read the entire encyclical, but stated he has reviewed summaries and excerpts from the Pope’s official document calling for caution and ethical responsibility in AI development.

‘What I have read sounds deeply profound and is exactly what one would expect from a church leader,’ Vance said in a phone interview with NBC News.

In his first encyclical since taking office, Pope Leo XIV warned against uncontrolled technological progress and stressed the importance of maintaining moral responsibility in preserving humanity.

The Pope’s official circular to bishops and all Catholics worldwide urges that innovation must continue, but within moral and ethical boundaries designed to protect human dignity and social stability.

‘What must be remembered about morality is that its principles never change, but the way you apply them does, as the world changes,’ Vance said.

With advancing technology and new forms of warfare, he said humans need to determine new ways of interacting with each other.

‘Therefore, you must reconsider all Catholic social teachings in light of the new world we live in, and I think that’s what Pope Leo XIV is attempting. I’m glad he’s doing it,’ Vance added.
