Jakarta — Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has highlighted the importance of strengthening the values of tolerance and moderation in a meeting with the Central Executive Board of the National Moderates Association (DPP PMN) at the Vice President’s Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the Vice President’s Secretariat, PMN’s General Chairman Kiki Fauzi said that in the meeting they discussed with the Vice President a range of strategic issues, from tolerance, education and human resource development to strengthening moderation in society.

‘We spoke at length and shared views on how the Indonesian and world landscape today requires the broadening of moderate thinking from Sabang to Merauke,’ he said after the meeting.

He added that the Vice President demonstrated openness to various elements of society, including non-government organisations that focus on strengthening national values and tolerance.

Therefore, Kiki added, the DPP PMN appointed Vice President Gibran as a ‘Figure of Moderation Today’ in recognition of his commitment to maintaining tolerance and harmony among adherents of different religions.

‘Mas Gibran could serve as an example for young leaders on how tolerance and harmony among religious communities can be maintained so that there are no frictions in society,’ he said.

Meanwhile, PMN’s Deputy General Chairman Enday Hidayat expressed appreciation for the Vice President’s steps, which are seen as actively ensuring government programmes reach directly to Papua’s communities.

He also highlighted development in Papua, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, health, and education.

According to Enday, the Vice President’s willingness to visit several high-security-risk areas has also drawn particular attention from Papua’s people.

Moreover, the Vice President stressed the important role of civil society organisations in maintaining unity and strengthening the space for dialogue in Indonesia’s plural society.

He said that the values of tolerance and moderation must be continually nurtured and disseminated so that Indonesia remains a harmonious, inclusive nation able to meet various global challenges together.

On the occasion, Vice President Gibran also instructed PMN to continue as an organisation that carries the values of tolerance and moderation within society.
