Vice President Gibran Pays Final Respects at Try Sutrisno's Funeral
Jakarta — Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka attended the funeral of the late sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Try Sutrisno at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta on Monday afternoon to pay his final respects.
As monitored through a live broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel, Gibran accompanied President Prabowo Subianto, who acted as the ceremony inspector.
The military funeral ceremony proceeded solemnly amid light rain. Gibran was dressed in a black suit, light blue tie, and black peci.
The ceremony began with a report from the ceremony commander, Colonel Benny Angga, to the ceremony inspector, followed by the reading of a brief biography of the deceased, including details of his military service and the various medals, decorations, and honours Try Sutrisno received throughout his lifetime.
Following the reading of the brief biography, President Prabowo, as ceremony inspector, proceeded to read the state funeral proclamation:
“I, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the state, nation, and Indonesian Armed Forces, hereby present to the earth the soul and services of the deceased. Name: Try Sutrisno; Position: Sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the Period 1993–1998, Commander of the Armed Forces for the Period 1988–1993. Son of Mr. Subandi, deceased, who has passed away in the interests and honour of the state and nation on Monday, 2 March 2026, at 06:58 WIB in Jakarta.
“May the path of service he undertook serve as an example for us all, and may his spirit find the best place beside Almighty God. Jakarta, 2 March 2026, President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto.”
The funeral proceeded with the lowering of the body into the grave and the scattering of flowers by family members. After this, a ceremony of honour was conducted accompanied by music and gun salutes.
President Prabowo then symbolically filled the grave. After the grave was covered with earth and a headstone was placed.
Near the grave, President Prabowo witnessed the filling of the grave, accompanied by Vice President Gibran, followed by three military chiefs of staff: Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal M. Tonny Harjono, Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Djamari Chaniago.
On the opposite side of the grave, besides family members, there were also several figures, including sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, eleventh Vice President Boediono, and several ministers from the Red and White Cabinet.
President Prabowo then laid a floral wreath on behalf of the state on Try Sutrisno’s grave. The President also rendered his final salute to Try Sutrisno. The laying of wreaths was then carried out by family representatives.
The ceremony continued with a prayer led by Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar. The ceremony concluded with final honours from all ceremony participants, including Prabowo and Gibran, accompanied by music from the TNI band.
After closing the ceremony, President Prabowo presented the Red and White flag and the state funeral proclamation to the deceased’s family.
Try Sutrisno, who served as the sixth Vice President during the administration of second President Suharto, passed away whilst receiving care at the Central Military Hospital of the Army (RSPAD) in Jakarta on Monday morning. The deceased passed away at the age of 90.
