Vice President Gibran Invites UI Students to NTT to Help Earthquake Victims

Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, together with student representatives from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Indonesia, travelled to East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Thursday (20/8).

Gibran wants to see first-hand the handling and post-disaster recovery efforts in several areas of NTT.

During the visit, Gibran also opened up space for students to take on a role, particularly in helping with trauma healing for victims in the disaster-affected areas.

As quoted from Antara, Gibran assessed that the spirit and concern of young people need to be facilitated so that they can be realised in concrete actions that help affected communities.

According to him, student involvement is an important part of the spirit of mutual cooperation in facing disasters.

Therefore, the government is not only ensuring that the needs of the community are addressed, but also encouraging the younger generation to be present and contribute according to their capacity and expertise.

Gibran wants to see directly the condition of communities affected by the disaster while ensuring that their needs during the emergency response period are met.

In this way, the government’s steps in the recovery process can be adjusted to the actual conditions and needs of the community.

During the working visit to NTT, Gibran will inspect a number of disaster-affected locations as well as basic public service facilities in several areas, namely Sikka, Manggarai and East Manggarai regencies.

Aftershocks are still occurring in several areas of NTT. This morning, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook and was felt in several areas, such as in Labuan Bajo.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the number of earthquake victims in NTT stands at 71 people dead. Thousands of residents are still surviving in evacuation shelters.
