Veteran players continue winning ways at Cigna Open
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's veteran tennis players continued to dominate at the 2001 Cigna Open Colors of Life tournament at the Bung Karno tennis complex.
Second seed Febi Widhiyanto defeated junior Prima Simpatiaji 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday, and will face Yusmawan Fahmi in Friday's semifinals. Yusmawan ousted fellow veteran Sebastian Da Costa 6- 1, 6-4 to advance.
"I don't have any special strategy for my next match against Yusmawan," Febi said after the match.
Veteran Suhendar Dinata scored the biggest upset of the day by toppling top seed Andrian Raturandang 6-3, 6-1. Suhendar set up a semifinals clash with Surya Wijaya, who outclassed Edy Kusdaryanto 6-3, 6-4.
In the women's singles, youngster Angelique Widjaja will challenge veteran player Liza Andriyani on Friday.
Angelique, or Angie, showed her talent in defeating teammate and rival Dea Sumantri 7-5, 6-4.
While Liza found no trouble overcoming qualifier Dian Anggraini 6-3, 6-3.
Top seed Wukirasih Sawondari barely broke a sweat in eliminating junior Novianti Warsono 6-1, 6-1. Wukirasih will next face veteran Eny Sulistyowati, who overpowered young player Dewi Monica Siregar 6-3, 6-0.
Angie and doubles partner Dea will face Eny and Liza in the women's doubles final on Friday.
Angie and Dea beat veteran Irawati Moerid Iskandar and Luky Tedjamukti 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday evening in a match that was delayed by heavy rain.
In the other quarterfinals, Eny and Liza had an easy 6-0, 3-1 win over Dewi and Ida Sutedja. Dewi retired in the second set with an injury.
In the men's doubles, Febi and Andrian beat qualifier Andery Setyawanto and Fandi Suyadi 6-3, 6-3 to set up a semifinal match against Surya and Yusmawan. Surya and Yusmawan beat Cuk Prihatmanto and Danang Tri Hermawan 6-1, 6-3.
The other semifinals match will pit Sebastian and Suhendar against Edy and Ferdi Fauzi.
Sebastian and Suhendar lost one set before ousting Ariawan Poebo and Djanuar Radjab 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. While Edy and Ferdi had to work hard to defeat Eko Kurniawan and Nesa Artha 6-4, 6-7, 6- 2. (ivy)
