Versions of article

From Kompas

With reference to the letter written by Dr. St Suwarsono from Yogyakarta (Kompas, Dec. 20, 1996) I would like to clarify the matter as follows:

1. It is true that I sent my article about Human Rights and Asian values to two media: The Jakarta Post and Kompas. I had informed the two publications earlier and asked for their approval. Both newspapers did not have any objections.

2. This was not the first time I did such a thing. Recently, I sent an article to the Post, which they published. The Indonesian version of the same article was also published in D&R. My rationale for doing so was that if I write to the Post, I usually get a reaction from foreign friends, both at home and abroad. However, many people, mainly students, will not get the chance to read the article unless it is also published by local papers, such as Kompas.

For that purpose, I asked the Post's permission to allow me to send the Indonesian version of my article to an Indonesian newspaper so that it could be read by my Indonesian friends, informing the latter paper that I had sent the English version of the article to the former.

Hopefully, this should clarify the case, and thank you for your attention.
