MANILA (AFP): Imelda Marcos said yesterday she was glad
President Fidel Ramos has softened the government's stand on the
return of her late husband's military chief, former general
Fabian Ver.
Ver, who was known for his fierce loyalty to his boyhood
friend Ferdinand Marcos, has been indicted for the 1983
assassination of Marcos' chief political rival Benigno Aquino on
his return from self-exile in the United States.
Ver, who fled the country with the Marcoses, was excluded from
the criminal trial because he was abroad, but 16 soldiers were
sentenced to life terms for the Benigno Aquino killing.
Although the former general's whereabouts have not been
divulged, some news reports said he has been seen in a southeast
Asian country.
