Venezuela Earthquake: Rodriguez Thanks Trump for US Assistance
Mexico City (ANTARA) - Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez stated she received a telephone call from President Donald Trump and expressed gratitude for the support provided by the United States following a major earthquake in Venezuela. “I received a call from President @realDonaldTrump and Secretary of State @marcorubio, who reaffirmed the United States Government’s support during this difficult time for Venezuela,” Rodriguez wrote on X. “They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting emergency response efforts by sending rescue teams, specialist equipment, support for temporary shelters, and humanitarian aid for affected families. We are deeply grateful for this gesture of friendship and cooperation.” Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said on Friday (26/6) that around 1,000 emergency personnel from a dozen countries have arrived in Venezuela to help clear debris and search for survivors following the earthquake. Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday (24/6), measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 respectively, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The latest official data recorded the death toll at 920 people, with a further 3,360 injured. Nearly 400 residential buildings were destroyed, infrastructure and hospitals were damaged, and the country’s main airport was closed. Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed his condolences over the tragic impact of the earthquake. Moscow stated it is ready to provide assistance to Caracas.
