Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 4,734

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela on 24 June has risen to 4,734, according to an official government statement released by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez on Tuesday. More than 20,900 people are still residing in temporary camps. The statement detailed that 4,734 people were killed, 16,740 were injured, and 6,462 were rescued. Government assistance has been provided to 128,324 families, Rodriguez said, adding that there are 107 temporary camps across the country housing 20,231 people. On Wednesday, 24 June, two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck the South American nation in quick succession. The initial 7.2 magnitude tremor occurred at 18:04 local time, followed by the main 7.5 magnitude quake just 39 seconds later.
