The number of fatalities from the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela has risen to 4,118, according to official figures. National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez confirmed the updated toll, which also includes 16,740 injured. The disaster began on Wednesday, 24 June, when two powerful earthquakes hit the northern coastal region of South America almost simultaneously. The first tremor, measuring magnitude 7.2, struck at 18:04 local time, followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 quake. Post-disaster response and victim data collection are still underway as the government grapples with massive infrastructure damage caused by the violent shaking.
