Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Reaches 6,509

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela in June continues to rise. According to the latest data released by the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, the total number of fatalities has now reached 6,509.

In a statement on his Telegram channel on Monday evening (24/8), Rodriguez detailed that in addition to the deaths, 226,696 survivors have received medical treatment at various hospitals. Meanwhile, rescue teams have successfully evacuated 6,462 people alive from the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Authorities conducted thorough inspections of 60,785 residential buildings in the affected areas. The inspection results revealed concerning infrastructure conditions.

As part of environmental recovery efforts, the government reported having cleared more than 600,000 tonnes of construction waste. This amount is equivalent to 28.61 per cent of the total estimated debris generated by the earthquake.

Acting President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, affirmed the government’s commitment to providing housing for residents who lost their homes. As of Monday (24/8), the government has handed over 335 new homes to affected families.

In addition, 1,001 dwellings have been fully rebuilt. The government is targeting the provision of more than 4,000 homes and apartments for affected families to be completed by the end of this year.

On 24 June 2026, Venezuela was struck by twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. La Guaira State and the capital city of Caracas were the areas with the most severe damage. The disaster triggered the declaration of a national state of emergency and the launch of a large-scale recovery programme by the local government.
