Vendors want to be allowed to return

JAKARTA: Evicted sidewalk vendors in Glodok, West Jakarta, have asked the city administration to let them return to their original location.

The vendors were at the site on Wednesday to collect their merchandise after the administration dismantled their kiosks on the first day of Idul Fitri on Nov. 3.

Most of the vendors, who have been doing business in the area since 1980s, said they had a valid permit to establish a kiosk in the city's busiest commercial area.

However, the West Jakarta administration has insisted on converting the area into a city park and asked the vendors to move to either inside Glodok market and Jembatan Lima area in West Jakarta or to Pluit market in North Jakarta and Petojo Hilir in Central Jakarta. -- JP
