I duly extended my vehicle license at Polda Metro Jaya and met
all the required terms. However, coincidentally, my plate number
has only one digit. The tax to be paid reached hundreds of
thousands of rupiah as printed on the license, plus a donation of
Rp 15,000 for the Red Cross.

However, I was aghast when a police lieutenant informed me
that owners of license plates with only one digit, had to pay an
extra fee of Rp 5,000,000 beside the official license fee. The
official said that the instruction came from his superiors. And
if I objected to this, my vehicle number would be withdrawn.

As a law abiding citizen, I was wondering to which department
this sum had to go and for what purpose. Thousands of vehicle
owners have to extend their licenses in the Jakarta, Bekasi,
Tangerang and Depok areas overseen by the Traffic Directorate of
Polda Metro Jaya.
