VDNI implements green logistics transformation
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Virtue Dragon Nickel Industry (VDNI) is gradually implementing a green logistics transformation through the electrification of heavy equipment and material handling vehicles at the Morosi smelter complex in Southeast Sulawesi.
This step is part of VDNI’s decarbonisation strategy to reduce carbon emissions from operational activities, improve energy efficiency, and create a better working environment.
“The company shares the same vision and mission as the Indonesian Government’s long-term goals regarding the control of industrial carbon emissions,” said PT VDNI Corporate Affairs Manager, Adam Rumanda, in a written statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The company’s electrification initiative for heavy equipment and material handling aligns with the Indonesian government’s policy direction to encourage industrial decarbonisation.
According to the Decarbonisation Roadmap of the Indonesian Nickel Industry by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappensas, the government aims to reduce emissions in the nickel industry by up to 81 per cent by 2045 through various transformative measures, including increased energy efficiency and the use of low-emission technologies.
The company noted that controlling carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency are key factors in the decarbonisation strategy at the Morosi Smelter, with a primary focus on Low-Carbon Electricity & Electrification.
The implementation of Low-Carbon Electricity & Electrification by the company began by increasing the use of electric-powered heavy equipment and material handling vehicles for operational activities within the smelter complex.
The electric-powered heavy equipment used includes excavators, loaders, and dump trucks to support various operational activities, ranging from raw material transport and preparation for ferronickel production to coal blending for power plant requirements.
To date, the company has operated a total of 69 units of electric-powered heavy equipment and material handling vehicles, consisting of 16 excavators and 13 loaders, with an investment value of approximately Rp45 billion.
Additionally, 40 dump truck units operated by external parties are being used to facilitate the transport of nickel ore and coal from the jetty to the smelter area, ensuring the smooth and reliable supply of production raw materials.
Compared to the use of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, the use of electric-powered heavy equipment and material handling provides specific benefits, namely the absence of direct exhaust emissions during operation and lower noise levels.
A total of 69 units of electric-powered excavators, loaders, and dump trucks are currently being operated by VDNI at the Morosi site.
