VD prevalent in Ujungpandang

UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: About 40 percent of the
prostitutes in this city are infected with syphilis and
gonorrhea, according to chief of the mayoralty health office
Jasmin.

He said last week that a recent study on venereal diseases
among local prostitutes show that the prevalence of syphilis and
gonorrhea is "appalling".

Jasmin declined to mention the number of prostitutes working
in the mayoralty.

"The best thing to avoid the diseases is to stop visiting
prostitutes," he said as quoted by Antara. He called on operators
of certain night spots to have their employees' health checked
regularly. (pan)
