Vatican Imposes Heaviest Sanctions on Defiant SSPX Bishops

The Vatican on Thursday imposed the heaviest penalty under Catholic canon law on a breakaway group after it consecrated four bishops in an act of defiance against the Pope. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Catholic Church’s oversight authority, announced that the four newly consecrated bishops, along with two others, would be expelled from the Church or excommunicated. The body also warned that the faithful who are ‘formally affiliated’ with the group, the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), are also considered ‘schismatic’ and therefore incur excommunication. The term schism denotes a serious formal split within the Catholic community, while excommunication renders a person unable to receive the sacraments, marry according to Catholic rites, hold ecclesiastical office, and results in the loss of various other church rights. The measures reverse various concessions previously granted by the Vatican in an effort to bring the group, which has had strained relations with Rome for years, back into the official fold of the Catholic Church. The SSPX consecrated the four bishops on Wednesday in a ceremony attended by approximately 15,500 people and their children near the group’s seminary in Écône, Switzerland, despite a direct request from Pope Leo XIV not to proceed. Under strict Catholic rules, only the Pope has the authority to permit the consecration of new bishops, and anyone doing so without permission is considered to have committed a ‘schismatic act’. The decree issued on Thursday stated that the two bishops who led the unauthorised consecration, along with the four priests who became new bishops, have all been excommunicated and stripped of all ecclesiastical offices and honorary titles. In an even more severe measure, the decree declared that they, and all formal adherents of the group, are in a state of schism with the Catholic Church. The SSPX was founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and other Catholics who opposed the reforms introduced by the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. These reforms included allowing Mass to be celebrated in languages other than Latin and developing relations with other Christian denominations and religions, a practice known as ecumenism.
