Vast paddy fields inundated
BARABAI, South Kalimantan: Floods triggered by incessant heavy
rains have been inundating thousands of hectares of paddy fields
in Hulusungai district, about 165 kilometers north of here.
The flooding disrupted land transportation between South and
East Kalimantan over the weekend because the highway connecting
the two provinces was inundated up to one-meter deep in some
places.
The flooding began receding yesterday and traffic returned to
normal, although some hamlets in the districts were still facing
high water levels, Antara reported.
Chief of the Pandawan subdistrict Fuddin Nafarin said that a
vast area of paddy fields had been inundated over three days and
that there was little hope for a harvest this season. (pan)
