Various Prohibitions in Jakarta During Ramadan
The Jakarta Provincial Government has banned sahur on the road (SOTR) activities during Ramadan 2026. The Jakarta administration reasoned that sahur on the road activities have the potential to cause security risks and public order disturbances.
"Governor Pramono does not permit activities that have the potential to cause security risks, disturbances, or brawls," said the Jakarta Governor's Special Staff for Public Communications, Cyril Raoul Hakim, when asked for confirmation on Monday, 16 February 2026.
He said the primary consideration behind the SOTR ban is to prevent public order disturbances such as illegal convoys, traffic congestion, and clashes between groups that frequently occurred during previous Ramadan periods. The regional government, he said, wants to ensure that the atmosphere of worship proceeds safely and conducively.
In addition to the SOTR restrictions, the Jakarta government has banned sweeping operations by community organisations. On the other hand, Chico confirmed that there are no additional prohibitions specifically imposed ahead of Ramadan, including restrictions on restaurant operations.
Chico added that the prohibitions and advisories would be set out in writing. An official letter from the provincial government will be issued before Ramadan, which is expected to begin on Wednesday, 18 February 2026. He estimated that the provincial government letter would be published on Tuesday.
He continued that the regulation of activities on public roads, such as convoys or on-the-road activities, is typically handled by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police whilst maintaining coordination with the regional government. "From year to year, regarding on-the-road issues and others, the regulations mostly come from the Metropolitan Police, but they certainly continue to coordinate with us," said Chico.
Currently, Chico said, the Jakarta provincial government is focusing Ramadan preparations on securing food stocks and price stability, strengthening religious activities, and monitoring the security situation. "Activities that cause security risks or disturbances are not permitted, but those that promote comfort are supported," he said.
