Vape as dangerous as conventional cigarettes, 1ml liquid equivalent to 20 cigarettes
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has stated that electronic cigarettes (vape) carry the same health risks as conventional cigarettes. High nicotine concentrations in vape liquid pose a serious threat to public health, particularly among the youth. Director of Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Siti Nadia Tarmizi explained that nicotine concentration in vape can reach 29-50 ml/mg, making 1ml of vape equivalent to 20 conventional cigarettes. She stressed the importance of all parties preventing vaping and smoking among children and teenagers, noting that nicotine exposure at a young age leads to difficult-to-break addiction and risks of cancer, heart disease, and stroke. Data from the Food and Drug Authority (Badan POM) indicates Indonesia is in a state of emergency with 7.4% of children and adolescents aged 10-18 being active smokers, equating to over five million children. The government continues to urge parents and educational institutions to tighten surveillance to curb rising numbers of new smokers and protect future human resource health. Kadin East Java will push for regulatory improvements to prevent vape being used as a narcotics medium by illegal syndicates. Cipinang Class I Prison, in collaboration with Bareskrim Police, has uncovered alleged inmate involvement in etomidate-laced vape distribution. Cardiologist Dr. Dony Yugo Hermanto has reiterated that vape risks equal those of conventional cigarettes, with the Narcotics Agency (BNN) finding etomidate in vape liquids.
