Van Driver Allegedly Extorted by Two Men in North Jakarta
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A van driver was allegedly extorted by two men at the traffic light on Jalan Jembatan Tiga Raya, Penjaringan, North Jakarta on Thursday (14/5/2026).
In a video uploaded to the Instagram account @warga.jakbar, a silver van is seen stopped at the traffic light at the intersection leading towards Jalan Pangeran Tubagus Angke, Tambora, West Jakarta.
The incident was recorded by the dashcam of the car behind it.
One of the men then approached a nearby truck.
Both men appeared to make gestures with their hands, indicating that they were asking for money from the driver.
The man wearing a jacket and hat even appeared to put his head and hand through the open window of the van.
Shortly after, when the traffic light turned green, the man fled towards the back after allegedly taking the e-toll card that was placed on the dashboard.
The driver immediately got out of his car and chased after the perpetrators.
In a Kompas.com report from the location on Friday (15/5/2026) at around 11:00 WIB, no men who regularly ask for money from drivers were found along Jalan Raya Jembatan Tiga to Jembatan Dua.
Arif (28), a local trader, confirmed that there are often people who can be seen soliciting money in the area.
However, Arif said he was not aware of the incident in which the extortion led to the theft of the e-toll card.
“Usually, there are some, especially in the afternoon, they act as informal traffic wardens while directing traffic, and sometimes they ask for money,” Arif said when met by Kompas.com at the location on Friday.
According to him, these informal traffic wardens often appear when the traffic situation along Jalan Jembatan Tiga Raya is congested.
